Sharing a project sent by Mark Nicol, who was part of this team:

Fourfoursixsix Architects, EOS and Ogle Models teamed up to create a laser-sintered egg for the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt that happened in London this Spring as part of a group of 200 unique eggs produced to raise fund for charities Action for Children and Elephant Family.

Fourfoursixsix’s Daniel Welham points out that “the design works around a rational grid of components that have been configured to react to both light and scale across the surface of the egg. Each component incorporates an aperture within its design that can adjust to control the amount of light entering the internal space of the form.”

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Design Program is a modernist vision for an optimistic future. The logo (often referred to as the “worm”) evokes qualities of unity, technical precision, scientific capabilities and uniqueness. Reduced to its simplest form; the one width, continuous-stroke letters are as contemporary today as when the logo was first introduced by Richard Danne (Design Director) and Bruce Blackburn (Designer) at Danne & Blackburn, New York, NY) more than 37 years ago. (Display)

In the fall of 2010, the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago with MAS Studio established an ongoing architecture and urban lecture series with the goal of establishing a cultural connection between the architectural discipline in Europe and the US.

In the fourth edition of the series, we organized the exhibition “Colombia: Transformed: Architecture=Politics.” This exhibit, curated by Vladimir Belogolovsky and Fernando Villa, traces ten recently built social projects by five leading voices in contemporary Colombian architecture: Daniel Bonilla and Giancarlo Mazzanti from Bogota, and Felipe Mesa, Juan Manuel Pelaez, and Felipe Uribe from Medellín. These visionary and socially conscious works: daycare centers, kindergartens, schools, a sport complex, and a library – mostly winners of architectural competitions, which have become the norm for building public projects in Colombia– reflect significant social shifts that are taking place in Latin America today. They demonstrate ideas of social inclusion as well as innovative architectural forms and spaces, which have been steadily transforming Colombian cities and the nation.

To accompany the exhibition, two lectures were organized: David Escobar, current Planning Department Commissioner of the City of Medellin, Colombia gave the inaugural lecture introduced by exhibition co-curator Fernando Villa. Architect Giancarlo Mazzanti gave the second lecture, introduced by exhibition curator Vladimir Belogolovsky.

The exhibition and lectures were made possible thanks to the close collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes and MAS Studio as well as Chicago Sister Cities International, the General Consulate of Colombia in Chicago, the Sociedad Colombiana de Arquitectos and Avianca.

Our project Cut. Join. Play. has been included in Spontaneous Interventions: Design Actions for the Common Good, the official U.S. presentation at the 13th International Venice Architecture Biennale.

From the official website: “Spontaneous Interventions will frame an archive of compelling, actionable strategies, ranging from urban farms to guerilla bike lanes, temporary architecture to poster campaigns, urban navigation apps to crowdsourced city planning. These efforts cut across boundaries, addressing architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and the digital universe, and run the gamut from symbolic to practical, physical to virtual, whimsical to serious. But they share an optimistic willingness to venture outside conventional practice and to deploy fresh tactics to make cities more sustainable, accessible, and inclusive.”

The 13th International Architecture Exhibition, directed by David Chipperfield and titled Common Ground, will run in Venice from 29th August through 25th November 2012 (Preview on August 27th-28th).

Can’t wait to see this show at the Art Institute of Chicago:

“In 1979 African American photographer Dawoud Bey (born 1953) held his first solo exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem, showing a suite of 25 photographs titled Harlem, U.S.A. Bey had been in residence at that museum for one year, and he had made the surrounding neighborhood a subject of study since 1975. Though raised in Queens, Bey and his family had roots in Harlem, and it was a youthful visit to the exhibition Harlem on My Mind at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969, that had given Bey his determination to become an artist.”

Designed for a young couple in a quiet Tokyo neighborhood, the 914 square-foot transparent house contrasts the typical concrete block walls seen in most of Japan’s dense residential areas. Associated with the concept of living within a tree, the spacious interior is comprised of 21 individual floor plates, all situated at various heights, that satisfy the clients desire to live as nomads within their own home.
