bLUMEN course at SAIC with Luftwerk

bLUMEN (blume : German for ‘flower.’ | lumen : Latin for ‘light’) combines art, architecture and technology to create a flourishing environment that engages and connects with community.

From August 1 until August 19, 2016, Iker Gil and Petra Bachmaier from Luftwerk will teach the bLUMEN course at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. In this course, they will explore how art, architecture, and technology can fuse to create a flourishing environment that engages and connects with communities. Throughout the course, students will learn how nature inspires and reacts to design, while developing design proposals for a horticultural grow-light pavilion. The workshop intends to be a platform introducing students to interdisciplinary design approaches including site-specific research, development, construction and more. This course envisions how design can transform and activate sites into fertile ground for creativity, innovation, and social interaction. Ultimately, bLUMEN will turn into a built installation in the Homan Square community on Chicago’s West Side.
