In the fall of 2010, the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago with MAS Studio established an ongoing architecture and urban lecture series with the goal of establishing a cultural connection between the architectural discipline in Europe and the US.

In the third edition of the series, we brought the exhibition European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture–Mies van der Rohe Award 2011. An initiative of the European Commission organized by the Fundación Mies van der Rohe, this biennial Prize commends architectural excellence and draws attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new concepts and technologies, offering both individuals and public institutions an opportunity to reach a clearer understanding of the cultural role of architecture in the construction of our cities. Furthermore, the Prize sets out to support young professionals as they set off on their careers.

This was the first exhibition in the world of the 2011 Prize as well as the first time that the Prize had been displayed outside Europe in its almost 25 years of history.

To accompany the exhibition, four lectures were organized: Ramon Bosch and Beth Capdeferro, partners of bosch.capdeferro and winners of the Emerging Architect Special Mention; Helmut Jahn, president and CEO of Murphy/Jahn; botanist Patrick Blanc, and architecture lecturer Carolyn Armenta Davis.

The exhibition and lectures were made possible thanks to the close collaboration with the General Consulates of European countries based in Chicago as well as Spanish institutions.
